SAPERE VI: Human Community and Divine Order: The Borysthenes Speech

Human Community and Divine Order: The Borysthenes Speech, introduced, translated and provided with interpretative essays by Heinz-Günther Nesselrath / Balbina Bäbler / Maximilian Forschner / Albert F. de Jong, Darmstadt 2003.

Based on an autobiographical description of the city of Olbia as an outpost of Hellenic civilisation, the speech develops Platonic and Stoic ideas of good human community and expands them into an image of harmonious coexistence of gods and humans in a rational cosmos. The volume offers essays on the rhetorical description and archaeological reality, on the philosophical intentions, on the 'magician myth' and on historical Zoroastrianism.
