SAPERE XLVII: Justin, Dialogue with Tryphon. Christians and Jews in Conversation.

Edited by Tobias Georges

Justin's Dialogue with the Jew Tryphon is the first surviving literary dialogue between a Christian and a Jew and is therefore an extremely important source for religious and intellectual history: the debates presented in the work concerning the search for God in the light of philosophy and, above all, of the Holy Scriptures, concerning faith in Jesus Christ or the observance of the divine Law as the way to blessedness or to salvation, offer a treasury of discourse for all those who are interested in culture, religion, philosophy, theology, and ethics in the Roman imperial period, and, naturally, especially for those to whom Christian-Jewish interactions and their beginnings are of particular concern. This volume explores Justin's Dialogue, in accordance with the interdisciplinary concept of the SAPERE series, by presenting, after an introduction to Justin and his work, the Greek text as well as a new German translation of the Dialogue and by including explanatory notes on the text. Based on this, five essays from different perspectives illuminate key aspects relating to Justin and his Dialogue .
