SAPERE XXXV: Civic Ethos, Political Engagement and the Preservation of the Status Quo

Introduced, translated and provided with interpretative essays by Frank Daubner, Vera Hofmann, Gustav Adolf Lehmann and Tobias Thum Edited by Gustav Adolf Lehmann

The present volume offers a complete new translation and commentary of Plutarch's Political Advice ( Praecepta gerendae rei publicaeof Chaironeia (province of Achaea), which presents itself as a missive to a young Hellene from Sardeis (province of Asia) who wants to enter the urban politics of his homeland under the conditions of Roman suzerainty. The interpretative essays explain, mainly on the basis of relevant inscriptional evidence, the political framework conditions in Achaea and Asia and appreciate the specifically literary character of the memorandum.
