SAPERE XIII: The Philosopher and His Image
The Philosopher and His Image, introduced, translated and with interpretative essays by Heinz-Günther Nesselrath / Sotera Fornaro / Eugenio Amato / Barbara Borg / Ilaria Ramelli / Jacques Schamp / Renate Burri / Johannes Hahn, Tübingen 2009.
This volume presents some lecture texts (or. 54, 55, 70, 71 and 72) of the orator and philosopher Dion of Prusa (c. 40 - after 111 CE) - also called Chrysostomos ("Goldmund") - which have never been commented on in detail before. They paint a picture of the philosopher not as an abstract thinker, but as a new Odysseus, Heracles, but also Socrates and Diogenes, who interferes and provokes people by his appearance and his very appearance and stimulates them to rethink and improve their own lives; they outline an ideal of practical ethics to which Dion himself felt committed and which can also have an effect far beyond his own time and the diverse society of the Roman imperial era.
