SAPERE XXXIII: Greek gods amongst themselves

Introduced, translated and with interpretative essays by Andreas Bendlin, Fabio Berdozzo, Janet Downie, Heinz-Günther Nesselrath and Adolf Martin Ritter. Edited by Fabio Berdozzo and Heinz-Günther Nesselrath.

In the Lucianic Conversations with the Gods , the traditional Greek world of the gods is subjected to a decidedly ironic-satirical illumination, which in the 2nd century AD was able to provide important arguments, not least for the young Christianity, to combat the old belief in the gods. The altogether twenty-five lively dialogical scenes have enjoyed only limited attention in recent decades; not least for this reason they are presented here anew. The volume presented here offers an introduction to the work, a considerably revised Greek text, a new translation with annotations, as well as six contributions from different disciplines (Classical Philology, Ancient History and Patristics), which aim to comprehensively open up the significance of these conversations with the gods not only in the context of their time, but also beyond it.
